A Modest Proposal: Puerto Rico's Crucible
The Fundació Antoni Tàpies is hosting the first solo exhibition in Spain of the Puerto Rico based artistic duo Allora & Calzadilla. However, the exceptionality of the present conjuncture in Puerto Rico has deeply affeted both the conception of the show and of its related publications.
Given the artists' political commitment to Puerto Rico and their ongoing exploration of the pitfalls of its wounded sovereignty, they have chosen to produce a critical analysis of Puerto rico's exception. A Modest Proposal is conceived as a public platform to address the critical status of this Caribbean community and outline a progressive agenda to rethink its futures. By taking its cue from jonathan Swift's inventive ad creative indictment of the abuses colonialism, the book appeals to the creativity of the political imagination to tackle a myriad of urgent questions, ranging from the colonial legacy of inequality to fuel poverty, climate change, debt, and austerity measures, to name just a very few.
The fact that Puerto Rico's debt is in fact an expression of the democratic deficit and the colonial patterns that have been imposed on the island by the USA cannot escape anyone and belies the marginality with which the question is paramount in questioning the neoliberal paradigms that brought it into being in the first place. Additionally, the forces at play in puerto rico's geopolitical reality, as "non-incorporated" territory of the united States, will resonate deeply in the context of Catalonia's present configuration.
